Via digital watermark consider adding monograms, coats of arms, or book subject/part wallpaper designs to some, or all pages.

Too much of a good thing: While technology exists to jam pack content on a page, and layer it with digital watermarks, don’t use it in such a way that it splits the reader’s attention too much. You don’t want readers feeling like they have a puzzle book that is hard to read.

Looking for other ways to have your manuscript “at hand”? A tablet may be a better compromise between a desk or laptop and a phone. Again, Android users can download MS Word app for free, while Windows users can access MS Word for free, while online. Many of today’s tablets can also attach keyboards, mice and wireless printers with ease while having robust memory (both speed and capacity).

When choosing your overall book design, always consider cost and marketability.

July 2004, V3#7: Design Tuesday, Jan 27 2009

Has your genealogy grown?  If you are publishing the work, many times it is necessary to consider more than one book to accommodate your research.  While many like to match the outsides of each book, another idea is to complement.  Rather than trying to match the color/texture of a cover that may have been produced a few years ago, select a different color or texture that is complementary.

June 2004, V3#6: Design Tuesday, Jan 27 2009

When putting out more than one family (line) book, this can be done as totally separate books with different design choices.  They can also be put out as volumes in the set of your family.  These would utilize the same design choices and be numbered.  Volumes can also be sold as sets or individual volumes easier than a group of family books that are not a “set”.

May 2004, V3#5: Design Tuesday, Jan 27 2009

Does your genealogy (book) contain quite a few pages?  Rather than publishing one book with 1,000 or more pages, consider breaking your work up into family lines for different books or volumes.  By doing this, they can be printed and released at different times or all at once.  This may ease the enormity of your “job” getting your family/families in print.
