July 2015 Magazine – Design Thursday, Jul 2 2015

QR (Quick Response) codes are Smartphone or tablet (with reader app) readable and may be used to to enrich and/or ease customer/reader interaction and experience. Some QR functionality may be inaccessible if not on an active internet connection. This type of code was envisioned as “open source”, so there are wide varieties of free and nearly free services available online:   Start your search with the term “QR code generator”. Many sites that contain generators provide further free information from usage ideas to history and examples.

April, 2015 Magazine – Design Tuesday, Mar 31 2015

Turning the back cover into a collage can accomplish many things including:

    • Highlight content within your book, or add photographs not included in the manuscript.

  • If color binding, this may be a value-added way to include some color photographs that were discarded or “downgraded” to black and white in the interior of the book.

January 2015 Magazine – Marketing Friday, Jan 9 2015

Online, consider releasing some content related to your book. Table of Contents, Preface, and Contributors are all great ideas that can be shared, in their entirety, that may encourage sales. For genealogy, another idea is the entire index. Giving the index away is arguably a good strategy, and for those who feel this is to much, offer a surname only (no page citation, given names, or other data) – as this lets potential buyers get an idea of what is in your book.

Electronic Magazine – June 2014, V13#6: Manufacture Monday, Jun 2 2014

Alternatives to adding material to your book in envelopes include adding photographs in “old-fashioned” picture corners. These are available in archival grade, but are harder for the unskilled to place in a book (4 small individual corners versus a single envelope enclosure).

Electronic Magazine – June 2014, V13#6: Design Monday, Jun 2 2014

Whether you choose to add electronic material to a traditionally printed book, or produce a fully electronic book, think outside the box on what you may wish to include:

  • Think of the value added to the book for signature collectors to have electronic copies of family correspondence.
  • What will family members who are philatelic (stamp) collectors say about scans of handwritten envelopes with stamps and postmarks?
  • Help set the stage of history by including copies of newspaper and other publication items from the family, geographical area, or culture.

  1. Physical product to give to paying customers –  for something concrete “in hand”.

  2. Easily update customers by including update links, cloud access, and/or emailing customers with provided update contacts for ongoing, value added, bonuses.

December 2006, V5 #12: Marketing Friday, Mar 20 2009

Options that will not add to the cost of a periodical may include:

If using email for renewals, don’t use it only for renewals, consider sending extra/color photos (if Copyright release is available), timely tidbits, in-depth coverage, save the dates, quote of the week/month, etc. – things to encourage opening over discarding.
