ARC (Advanced Reading Copy): A sample publication produced with author/customer submitted material.  Many times this is in an alternate binding (or unbound with small publications) than the main publishing.  The reproduction process is usually not the same as the main printing (100+) and therefore differences in quality, text block placement, etc. may occur between the ARC and the published book.  For POD, however, this gives the customer the chance to see the quality of photograph the supplied material will produce.  Since Gregath works mainly from submitted camera ready copy, an ARC is generally not necessary.  Our quality guarantee covers any printer error (such as upside down photos) that may occasionally occur.

Art(work): Non-text material (in our shop, this excludes photographs) – may include such things as decorative lettering (not font related), drawings, ornamentation, tables, charts, sketches, maps, reproductions of documents, decorative borders, etc.

Terms marked with an asterisk (*) are not generally used in our office.

For each project there are both expensive upgrades, and sometimes changes that can be made more economically than assumed: This is why communicating effectively with a publisher is important. Did you know when printing a few copies changing a page with personalized content is very inexpensive, altering a color cover can be cost prohibitive (though there are a few options).

Perfect if producing POD, consider personalizing each book’s cover. This can be done with a simple name, different backgrounds or photos, graphic and fonts. The cost differences depend on type of cover which may also make total quantity ordered a factor. For large hard cover orders, have personalization done by extra line stamps for the most economic. For soft cover, the economical personalized options are more suited for non-printed spine options such as comb and saddle.

Saddle Stitch: Soft type binding where pages are printed four and folded in the middle (spine) and stapled in the fold. Many program books and most magazines are saddle stitched.  Due to the paper being folded as a spine, this works well with only small page count books.  Click here for information web page.

Sans Serif Type: Without serif.  Example: Arial. Though uncluttered, the lack of serif separates the letters and words for the reader.

Terms marked with an asterisk (*) are not generally used in our office.

Can’t decide whether to publish in hard cover or soft cover? Is economics getting in the way of what you envisioned your book to be? One suggestion would be to publish soft cover first edition books (less expense) and take special orders for hard cover books that can be ordered singly (print on demand) and shipped directly to buyers.

If utilizing print on demand (POD), offer a personalized page such as a special half title, frontice piece, or title page.

As an individual author, have you signed up for USPS Informed Delivery yet? While this service expanded to individual post office box holders last month, it’s still not available to addresses that are solely business. Why does it matter? If you use the Informed Delivery app, and mail product at a post office, use the app to track the packages: Open the app and after the tracking number has been applied, scan the #, then when is asks if you want it added to your dashboard – say yes. The packages then queue in the app in a tab next to your incoming mail and auto update.

When was the last time you’ve reviewed the basics? Many “old timers” learned it once and don’t feel like going over “old ground” again. However, reviewing what makes good research – especially from alternate sources, can give you new perspective. Are you a Handibook, Redbook, NGS or FGS person? Check out the others – you may learn nothing new, but going over the material may spark new ideas.

Make your publication special!  While there are many ways to accomplish this, one way is to number each book of your publication.  The easiest way to do this is to place a notation such as “First Edition, ___________ of 50” somewhere in the fore pages.  When the books arrive, you number the blank and, if so inclined, sign the book.  Another way to do this is to commission a particular numbered page go in each book.  Such as with a run of 100, there would be 100 different title pages each saying a different number of 100.  This can run into some additional expense if the “one of” pages are mechanically destroyed during the publication process.  With our process, the page can be replaced if destroyed.  However, the further along in the process it is when it gets destroyed means either a) more expense replacing it or b) that number would not exist.
