Basic facts about ancestors found in many obituaries and death notices:

  1. Date of death, name of cemetery, date and place of funeral and burial
  2. Name, place and year of birth
  3. Names of children, where they lived, and their position in the family’s birth order
  4. Names of towns and how long they lived in each one
  5. Age of spouse at death and how along ago that was
  6. Details on the longevity of parents and grandparents
  7. count of descendants, by generation
  8. Much, Much, MORE!

Specific suggestions while deciding index entry/item framework:

  • If you plan to include nicknames or AKA, decide how you will be formatting them. Do not format them the same as maiden names. We suggest nicknames in quotes “Bob”, and maiden names in parenthesis (Blu).

Specific suggestions while deciding index entry/item framework:

  • Maiden/Married Names can be a handful. However, when the information is available, it is important to list the female under both in an index. For Jane Harrison Smith, you should find a listing of some type for Jane under both Harrison and Smith. This can be accomplished by a double entry, blind entry, or a see also entry.

When marketing a book, try to keep all of your author produced material to a general theme concerning format.  This might include choosing a paper/card stock color, keeping the major amount of your fonts the same (many even make sure it matches the book).  You may even choose a “theme” (ready made design – often involving graphics)  from a publishing program and carry it throughout.  Like any large retailer, this “small stuff” will help build what is called Name Brand Recognition.  When they see the envelope in the mail, they know without even looking it’s from you.  If they see a flyer they know it’s about the book without reading it.  Many “repeat authors” even carry the design over to other projects.  Some keep the exact same design format, others change one or two elements such as color or headline font.

Always be aware of nicknames and name derivatives.  While looking for Gertie, don’t discount any Marguerites, etc.  Even if the family tradition states that Mel is a person’s given Christian name, don’t ignore a Melvin if its near the right place and/or time.
