FREE: Submit a copy of your manuscript in MS Word and we’ll convert it to PDF at no charge. Electronic approval is required before using converted PDF for print production. These electronic book files are meant for personal and family use and enjoyment, as they will contain no Copyright or Digital Rights Management (DRM) protections.
OR Interested in a PDF book manuscript from hard copy? If it is document feedable, we will only charge a penny a page to convert (at least 50% savings)
OR EPUB file (more “traditional” EBook format) of interest? Basic file conversion is free, but seldom does a basic conversion result in a file authors are happy with due to the differences between the printed page and EBook formatting. Headband/Footband (also header/footer in binding terms): A strip of embroidered cloth at the end (top/bottom) of the spine, extending beyond the book block. Optional ALA element included in Gregath deluxe binding. Now available as upgrade in color hard binding.
Hinge In: A paper or cloth strip may be adhered along the binding edge of the a page, or pages, to be added after the book has been bound, so that the strip extends beyond the binding edge. This can then be “hinged” into a “finished” book by pasting up the part of the paper or cloth strip that extends beyond the addition, and adhering the strip to the binding edge of a sheet (or leaf) in the text block. This may also be used to change a given published page: cut the page to be replaced out of the existing book leaving as wide a bound paper strip as the binding margin will allow; follow instructions as above or – trim the replacement page to fit the published book (with extra paper to overlap bound strip); using an archival quality media, attach replacement page to bound strip.

Do you have something (format) you use over and over again from MS Office – maybe with just a little bit of tweaking? Consider making the format (blank without personalized information) into a template. In your MS program, make a file that contains all the repetitive format and information. When you save as (save if not already saved), click the down arrow by format (under file name) and choose template (word template, excel template, etc.). To make it easier to use, save it where your other templates for that program are saved – or make a dedicated template file folder that is easy to find.

Camera-Ready Digital Print Manuscript (CRDPM):/Camera-Ready Copy Machine Manuscript (CRCMM): hard copy/document feedable (* no paste up, attachments, gummy labels, etc.), single sheets printed one side, all same size, with binding margin (if desired). Many times, these will need to be digitized for optimum quality. Note: two sided manuscripts can sometimes create copy difficulties, therefore, we discourage such practices. Please note that all forms of reproduction will loose some clarity.
Camera Ready Disk: Computer disk that contains Camera Ready Manuscript to be printed.

Add additional material to a book with an electronic assist:
Hybrid books combine traditional printed books with additional electronic media. Have lots of stuff you wish to include? Instead of producing multiple discs to bind into a book, consider attaching a USB drive to a bookmark ribbon: this can be sewn into hard cover books.

Mixed Media Books: Authors who have opted for a traditionally printed book should not overlook the possibility of including additional material on CD with their books. This can be done totally separately or with an envelope (or spindle) affixed to the book itself (generally inside the back cover). The author can include files of anything that was “cut” from the book, more reference, further stories & details, links to favorite places, artwork, GEDCOM, etc.

Offset printing versus digital printing
When delving into the world of digital reproduction/printing, (family) historians should be sure exactly what they are paying for. A large percentage of “digital print” that is being published is simply being produced on a digital based copy machine. While today’s digital machines (of any type) are much better than the copy machines even 15 years ago, this format hasn’t been tested by time. Much like any E-book format you can get today – it cannot be considered archival quality because of this. There are some true digital printing presses – accepted and tested printing processes that receive their printable image directly from a computer rather than plate, film, or other media. These are as archival as their printing process that has been tested over time.

Prepare (and send) press releases to all media (newspaper, radio, TV, etc.) within the area as you are completing work on the manuscript, again when they are being published, and after to cover such events as signing parties, etc.

In the world of MP3 players and multi-media computers, consider looking into podcasts for further information. The Genealogy Guys do a weekly podcast (broadcast online that can be listened to at any time/on demand) that is a pleasure to listen to – as well as having great genealogy information. If you are an oral learner (you have to be told, rather than reading, or experimenting), podcasts are a blessing, and many can be accessed at no fee. Do you find you have the radio on most of the time “in the background”? Download a podcast – or several – and you’ll have the most effective “learning by osmosis” as you can get. Podcasts can be found online for a variety of subjects – even computers and software. This can also be a targeted value added service if played at a customer service related venue. The patrons of the Muskogee, Oklahoma Library (Genealogy Department) already enjoy this feature! Search podcasts out with your favorite search engine, or query your eList(s) for recommendations.
