What’s It Mean? A-Z
///////////////////////////////

Headband/Footband (also header/footer in binding terms): A strip of embroidered cloth at the end (top/bottom) of the spine, extending beyond the book block. Optional ALA element included in Gregath deluxe binding. Now available as upgrade in color hard binding.

Hinge In: A paper or cloth strip may be adhered along the binding edge of the a page, or pages, to be added after the book has been bound, so that the strip extends beyond the binding edge. This can then be “hinged” into a “finished” book by pasting up the part of the paper or cloth strip that extends beyond the addition, and adhering the strip to the binding edge of a sheet (or leaf) in the text block.  This may also be used to change a given published page: cut the page to be replaced out of the existing book leaving as wide a bound paper strip as the binding margin will allow; follow instructions as above or – trim the replacement page to fit the published book (with extra paper to overlap bound strip); using an archival quality media, attach replacement page to bound strip.

Do you have something (format) you use over and over again from MS Office – maybe with just a little bit of tweaking? Consider making the format (blank without personalized information) into a template. In your MS program, make a file that contains all the repetitive format and information. When you save as (save if not already saved), click the down arrow by format (under file name) and choose template (word template, excel template, etc.). To make it easier to use, save it where your other templates for that program are saved – or make a dedicated template file folder that is easy to find.

Electronic Magazine – November 2014 v13#11: Design Monday, Nov 3 2014

Publishing a hard copy edition (unbound or in hard or soft cover) one-at-a-time (print on demand) presents some unique options most printed editions do not have. As you are printing a single book for a single customer, consider adding value to the book by including the following offers:

  1. Number each POD book you produce. Keep track of books in hard cover and soft cover, or total produced. Your first could be 1 in 2014, 1 Print on Demand, or some other way – the next ordered would be 2, etc.

Electronic Magazine – August, 2014, v13#8: Design & Production Monday, Aug 11 2014

If possible, it’s always a good idea to have your publisher selected before finalizing your color hard cover files. Though all cover art will need to allow for the thickness of the book board, as it folds around it and attaches to the inside (under the end sheets), variances in many other things will change the exact size and placement of elements on the cover layout. Additionally, even if returning to a publisher, don’t assume the cover process hasn’t altered in some way over time. December, 2013 Electronic Magazine – Glossary A to Z Tuesday, May 20 2014

Book Block: Endpapers, text block and all other materials before hard or soft binding.

Bonded Leather: A hard binding material that is made by mixing genuine leather fibers with an adhesive – bonding them into a viable cover material that is then embossed to reproduce the original texture. Less durable than genuine leather, it does retain it’s distinct smell.

E-Magazine Volume 12 Issue 6: Design Thursday, Jun 6 2013

Ribbons can be sewn into hard cover books easily. Because of the extra handling however, they are not always considered economical. Basic prices average $3.00-5.00 per book

E-Magazine Volume 12 Issue 5: Production Thursday, May 2 2013

Standard hard binding prices assume books bound on the long edge, however books can be bound on the short edge for as little as $1.00 extra (paper grain running parallel to binding edge).

E-Magazine Volume 12 Issue 5: Design Thursday, May 2 2013

Hard bound books using bonded leather cover material is a fairly economical upgrade in elegance. A great “coffee table book” cover, it even retains much of the unique smell of leather. This material averages an up-charge of $5.00 per book in small quantities – if the color selected is in stock.
