Saddle Stitch: Soft type binding where pages are printed four and folded in the middle (spine) and stapled in the fold. Many program books and most magazines are saddle stitched.  Due to the paper being folded as a spine, this works well with only small page count books.  Click here for information web page.

Sans Serif Type: Without serif.  Example: Arial. Though uncluttered, the lack of serif separates the letters and words for the reader.

Terms marked with an asterisk (*) are not generally used in our office.

Can’t decide whether to publish in hard cover or soft cover? Is economics getting in the way of what you envisioned your book to be? One suggestion would be to publish soft cover first edition books (less expense) and take special orders for hard cover books that can be ordered singly (print on demand) and shipped directly to buyers.

If utilizing print on demand (POD), offer a personalized page such as a special half title, frontice piece, or title page.

As an individual author, have you signed up for USPS Informed Delivery yet? While this service expanded to individual post office box holders last month, it’s still not available to addresses that are solely business. Why does it matter? If you use the Informed Delivery app, and mail product at a post office, use the app to track the packages: Open the app and after the tracking number has been applied, scan the #, then when is asks if you want it added to your dashboard – say yes. The packages then queue in the app in a tab next to your incoming mail and auto update.

When was the last time you’ve reviewed the basics? Many “old timers” learned it once and don’t feel like going over “old ground” again. However, reviewing what makes good research – especially from alternate sources, can give you new perspective. Are you a Handibook, Redbook, NGS or FGS person? Check out the others – you may learn nothing new, but going over the material may spark new ideas.

Headband/Footband (also header/footer in binding terms): A strip of embroidered cloth at the end (top/bottom) of the spine, extending beyond the book block. Optional ALA element included in Gregath deluxe binding. Now available as upgrade in color hard binding.

Hinge In: A paper or cloth strip may be adhered along the binding edge of the a page, or pages, to be added after the book has been bound, so that the strip extends beyond the binding edge. This can then be “hinged” into a “finished” book by pasting up the part of the paper or cloth strip that extends beyond the addition, and adhering the strip to the binding edge of a sheet (or leaf) in the text block.  This may also be used to change a given published page: cut the page to be replaced out of the existing book leaving as wide a bound paper strip as the binding margin will allow; follow instructions as above or – trim the replacement page to fit the published book (with extra paper to overlap bound strip); using an archival quality media, attach replacement page to bound strip.

Do you have something (format) you use over and over again from MS Office – maybe with just a little bit of tweaking? Consider making the format (blank without personalized information) into a template. In your MS program, make a file that contains all the repetitive format and information. When you save as (save if not already saved), click the down arrow by format (under file name) and choose template (word template, excel template, etc.). To make it easier to use, save it where your other templates for that program are saved – or make a dedicated template file folder that is easy to find.

If possible, it’s always a good idea to have your publisher selected before finalizing your color hard cover files. Though all cover art will need to allow for the thickness of the book board, as it folds around it and attaches to the inside (under the end sheets), variances in many other things will change the exact size and placement of elements on the cover layout. Additionally, even if returning to a publisher, don’t assume the cover process hasn’t altered in some way over time. Ribbons can be sewn into hard cover books easily. Because of the extra handling however, they are not always considered economical. Basic prices average $3.00-5.00 per book

E-Magazine Volume 12 Issue 5: Production Thursday, May 2 2013

Standard hard binding prices assume books bound on the long edge, however books can be bound on the short edge for as little as $1.00 extra (paper grain running parallel to binding edge).

Color hard cover files should be submitted as CMYK (Cyan, Magenta, Yellow, Key Black) rather than RGB (Red, Green, Blue) for best results.

Do the color hard bound books you see have something missing but you are not sure what? Turn the book on end and look at the spine edge – is it just cover and paper, or does it have head and foot bands? This is now a standard option at GCI.
