If already paying for color, use of color watermarks on an otherwise black and white page can add “pep” and dimension.

Did you know a digital watermark could be described as traditional ghosting of images? A well planned execution can produce much finer detail to much greater effect than many professional ghosting projects of yesteryear.

Even in today’s world, print has still proven the most effective channel for sales – even when promoting electronic editions. Free PR promotion in publications (newspapers, newsletters, bulletins, circulars, boutique papers and magazines) may need follow up – the days of “if you write it they will print it” are, for the most part, long gone. In addition to brainstorming what publications to send them (alumni, your hometown, subject town[s], industry specific, church, organization, or other special interest), be sure to include all contact information (including electronic) in your cover letter.

A taxing question: Are tax records standardized? No – different places and times produce different records. A quick listing of a few include: poll or head, quit-rent, income, real property (land), personal property. Documents may record these separately or in combination and the quantity of data varies as well.

While there may be an app for so many things, what happens if there isn’t? For instance, one of our staffers has a Yahoo mail account and a Windows tablet. Yahoo has a seamless Android app, but there are security issues with the Windows system. Don’t get too caught up in needing an app for everything: Hopefully your appliance has enough memory, it can handle the traditional websites one might be used to visiting on a desktop or laptop.

OR EPUB file (more “traditional” EBook format) of interest? Basic file conversion is free, but seldom does a basic conversion result in a file authors are happy with due to the differences between the printed page and EBook formatting. January 2015 Magazine – Genealogy Friday, Jan 9 2015

Have you checked Google Books to see if there is any free material that can help with your research? Sure, they’d like to sell you a copy, but you might be surprised how much free text you might use is available.

January 2015 Magazine – Marketing Friday, Jan 9 2015

Online, consider releasing some content related to your book. Table of Contents, Preface, and Contributors are all great ideas that can be shared, in their entirety, that may encourage sales. For genealogy, another idea is the entire index. Giving the index away is arguably a good strategy, and for those who feel this is to much, offer a surname only (no page citation, given names, or other data) – as this lets potential buyers get an idea of what is in your book.

Electronic Magazine – November 2014 v13#11: Marketing Monday, Nov 3 2014

As family historians, most authors have a list of public (or private) repositories that they would like to see their work preserved in. Many times this list equals or dwarfs the list of “paying customers”. Many times budget will impact how many courtesy copies may even be produced: Consider soliciting sponsored copies. With POD, there is no reason a special “donated by” page can not be included directly into the book binding. A more traditional route would be with personalized donation book plates. Further incentives, beyond the good preservation work, might include a gift, digital copies of source material, special access to your archives, etc.

January, 2014 Electronic Magazine – Computers Tuesday, May 20 2014

New to building web pages and email stationary? Be careful with using symbols. If the person on the other end doesn’t have the font your symbol is in, it will substitute characters and may make your page look strange. While symbols are faster to load than graphics, perhaps a diamond, scroll, etc. would be a good design idea.
