Saddle Stitch: Soft type binding where pages are printed four and folded in the middle (spine) and stapled in the fold. Many program books and most magazines are saddle stitched.  Due to the paper being folded as a spine, this works well with only small page count books.  Click here for information web page.

Sans Serif Type: Without serif.  Example: Arial. Though uncluttered, the lack of serif separates the letters and words for the reader.

Can’t decide whether to publish in hard cover or soft cover? Is economics getting in the way of what you envisioned your book to be? One suggestion would be to publish soft cover first edition books (less expense) and take special orders for hard cover books that can be ordered singly (print on demand) and shipped directly to buyers.

As an individual author, have you signed up for USPS Informed Delivery yet? While this service expanded to individual post office box holders last month, it’s still not available to addresses that are solely business. Why does it matter? If you use the Informed Delivery app, and mail product at a post office, use the app to track the packages: Open the app and after the tracking number has been applied, scan the #, then when is asks if you want it added to your dashboard – say yes. The packages then queue in the app in a tab next to your incoming mail and auto update.

July 15 Deadline for Retreat on the lake 2009 Monday, Jun 29 2009 

Lake Shore DawnRetreat on the lake 2009 registration deadline is fast approaching. If you have put off reserving your space until the last minute, now is the time. July 15, 2009 is when we will decide if the retreat is viable in the 2009 economy. Originally, this was the discount reservation date. However, if budgets can not be stretched to include discount registrations, we know most can not include the luxury of a full price retreat.

It’s not easy being green… Wednesday, Feb 25 2009 

There is a lot to be said for “being green”. Gregath Publishing is pleased to announce that we have ongoing efforts in materials and energy economy. Some which were instigated when we opened in 1970. A printer may not seem like a good match as a business interested in saving the planet. However, we have always been interested in waste management and proactive economy. Responsible production enriches all our lives and boosts the quality of life we enjoy today. Join us in doing things to help our environment.

We

  • Use papers with manufacturer recycled content.

  • Offer e-books as an option to printed publication.

  • Accept manuscripts and other original materials digitally.

  • Do quite a bit of customer communication electronically.

  • Maintain a website of over 2,500 pages of information to refer customers to, rather than sending everyone individual literature. Traditionally printed material is still available upon request.

  • We offer some proofing services digitally.

  • Our digital print system eliminates the step of plate making, thus deleting the consumables produced in offset printing.

  • Pre-consumer recycling paper printed on one side – it is used in our FAX, as transitory print outs (such as edit drafts), scratch paper, etc.

  • None of our staff use vehicles during lunch breaks.

  • Many of our staff walk or bicycle to work.

  • Staff doesn’t use disposable coffee or drink cups.

  • Battery chargers are promptly unplugged when charging is complete.

  • Our front offices, as well as production facilities have always used fluorescent lighting responsibly – we are slowly making the switch to compact fluorescent.

  • Shredder output (uncoated) is offered to staff for garden mulch.

  • Participate in “waste” paper recycling.

  • Our waste percentage in production is between 2-5%, rather than the industry standard of 10%.

  • Shop rags are cleaned and reused.

  • Spills are kept to a minimum – thus reducing cleaning chemical use.

  • Used colored slip sheets are padded and given to school children.

  • No where in our facilities are air freshening or scenting products used.

Items in green are things we do to primary recycle. These recycling efforts are 100% as there is no additional processing to prepare for the secondary use.

April 2005, V4#4: Production Wednesday, Jan 28 2009 

Most of the work Gregath Publishing Company does in-house is offset printed.  We offset print on uncoated papers.  Uncoated papers have been traditionally classified by weight.  Interest has begun to increase also as to the brightness as well as archival nature.  As publishers, we have selected as our basis paper one that balances all of these issues while taking into account economy as well.  If a customer has a list of specifics, or even a particular brand/type of paper, we are happy to get paper mill quotes and pass the information on. 

Gregath’s standard book paper is a #50/60 uncoated white paper, acid free with a brightness of 84% – long grain.

December 2003, V2#12: Design Thursday, Jan 22 2009 

Most printer/publishers can and do provide color work for customers. Color achieved as a result of ink changes or combination ink runs are often priced higher. Depending on the method of reproduction however if you wanted say brown printing on cream paper the ink is still 1 color (brown instead of black) and wouldn’t be charged extra (however the color paper would cost extra). Often color changes are used to highlight certain text areas or for a coat of arms. Should you desire a color photo page, we offer process work. However, it must be pointed out that it is not cost effective on runs less than 500.  We can also have color pages copied or in very small quantities possibly inkjet reproduced for economy.
