Too much of a good thing: While technology exists to jam pack content on a page, and layer it with digital watermarks, don’t use it in such a way that it splits the reader’s attention too much. You don’t want readers feeling like they have a puzzle book that is hard to read.

Looking for other ways to have your manuscript “at hand”? A tablet may be a better compromise between a desk or laptop and a phone. Again, Android users can download MS Word app for free, while Windows users can access MS Word for free, while online. Many of today’s tablets can also attach keyboards, mice and wireless printers with ease while having robust memory (both speed and capacity).

Did you know that you can use the Microsoft Office combination of Excel and Word to produce individual items up to, and including, postal bar codes? When desiring postal bar codes, the computer system will need the bar code font installed. Also, double check with your printer specifications to be sure it is capable of producing USPS readable codes.

May 2012 E-Zine (V11#5): Computer Monday, May 7 2012

Be prepared during large software updates for any computer to “run” slower than normal. If you are on a limited or “fair share” internet connection, it may be a good idea to let the update run without placing any other usage demands on it until download is complete. Above all – try not to be frustrated.

Do I need a Web Presence?

If you are an author or genealogist, the short answer is a shouted YES. Whether it be a Facebook or MySpace page, Twitter account, blog (Blogger, WordPress, etc.), a dedicated website with your own domain, or combinations of the above, being on the internet is becoming as standard as business cards, letterhead, and post office boxes for professional and hobbyists alike. You need to “get out there” to be found, just be careful how much you reveal. I always suggest using a post office box for an online address. If you want to talk to folks on the phone, but are worried about giving your permanent information out, buy a pay as you go phone. They are like disposable email addresses, if the account becomes a problem, discard it.

July 2003, V2#7: Define Sunday, Jan 11 2009

E-book: Any book or manuscript that is reproduced for distribution electronically on the Internet or movable storage (i.e. 3½” floppy or CD, etc.).

November 2006, V5#11: Genealogy Tuesday, Jan 6 2009

Check with your local library, even if they don’t have a large genealogy section, to see what online services they offer. Don’t stop with your hometown library! Check other libraries that neighbor your “home” library’s service area. Not all library’s are aware of what other near by library’s offer. It may be worth a trip to get a library card for the services the offer from their website that you can take advantage from your home computer.
