Saddle Stitch: Soft type binding where pages are printed four and folded in the middle (spine) and stapled in the fold. Many program books and most magazines are saddle stitched.  Due to the paper being folded as a spine, this works well with only small page count books.  Click here for information web page.

Sans Serif Type: Without serif.  Example: Arial. Though uncluttered, the lack of serif separates the letters and words for the reader.

Can’t decide whether to publish in hard cover or soft cover? Is economics getting in the way of what you envisioned your book to be? One suggestion would be to publish soft cover first edition books (less expense) and take special orders for hard cover books that can be ordered singly (print on demand) and shipped directly to buyers.

As an individual author, have you signed up for USPS Informed Delivery yet? While this service expanded to individual post office box holders last month, it’s still not available to addresses that are solely business. Why does it matter? If you use the Informed Delivery app, and mail product at a post office, use the app to track the packages: Open the app and after the tracking number has been applied, scan the #, then when is asks if you want it added to your dashboard – say yes. The packages then queue in the app in a tab next to your incoming mail and auto update.

When was the last time you’ve reviewed the basics? Many “old timers” learned it once and don’t feel like going over “old ground” again. However, reviewing what makes good research – especially from alternate sources, can give you new perspective. Are you a Handibook, Redbook, NGS or FGS person? Check out the others – you may learn nothing new, but going over the material may spark new ideas.

Layout your work

Basic layout formats include a single block/column and two columns of the same width for books. Generally books no larger than 8.5×11″ don’t have more than two columns because it is rarely economical. Depending on your content and format selections, the question of economics for one and two column may change.

Back to basics: Consider buying a box of #10 envelopes. They fit inside a standard business envelope (#12) without folding. A folded SASE adds more thickness than a folded letter in a flat SASE. This sometimes causes envelopes to get caught in automated machinery. This is a good addition to your “tool box” for queries and SASE.

Basic research rule that is most commonly overlooked – no matter how much material you check, keep a record of what you have checked.

Basic research rule that is almost as most commonly overlooked – cite your sources.  Make sure when you locate a document, reference, or listing that you take detailed information about not only what reference you were using, but where and when it was found.

Keep these rules in mind and your search may be a much more orderly and enjoyable experience :o)

Not sure about Microsoft Windows Vista? Still? Look into your local technical school, public school computer club, public library, etc. If no one offers a basic or how to course, suggest any service provider do so. There is always a learning curve, but generally, there are valuable improvements in new roll outs.

MS Word Templates

Do you have a file that you use over and over again – such as letterhead layout or basic query? If so, an easy way not to have to retype it all each time is to save a generic file. If there is changing information in the text, replace it with a line of symbols you eye is drawn to (*************). When you want to use the saved file, open it and automatically save as with the new file name, then compose. If you want to, a real template can be made, but they are opened differently then regular files. Get  the file ready, then when you save as, change the program type from “word document” to “document template” – save as usual but where the computer wants you to. Then, to use the template, from the pull down menus choose file, then new. This will bring up the right hand pane or a window. If the template you want isn’t shown in the right hand pane, choose general templates which will bring up the window – choose the template you wish to use and it will open as a new document.
