///////////////////////////////
What’s It Mean?
///////////////////////////////
ARC (Advanced Reading Copy): A sample publication produced with author/customer submitted material. Many times this is in an alternate binding (or unbound with small publications) than the main publishing. The reproduction process is usually not the same as the main printing (100+) and therefore differences in quality, text block placement, etc. may occur between the ARC and the published book. For POD, however, this gives the customer the chance to see the quality of photograph the supplied material will produce. Since Gregath works mainly from submitted camera ready copy, an ARC is generally not necessary. Our quality guarantee covers any printer error (such as upside down photos) that may occasionally occur.
Art(work): Non-text material (in our shop, this excludes photographs) – may include such things as decorative lettering (not font related), drawings, ornamentation, tables, charts, sketches, maps, reproductions of documents, decorative borders, etc.
Terms marked with an asterisk (*) are not generally used in our office.

For each project there are both expensive upgrades, and sometimes changes that can be made more economically than assumed: This is why communicating effectively with a publisher is important. Did you know when printing a few copies changing a page with personalized content is very inexpensive, altering a color cover can be cost prohibitive (though there are a few options).
///////////////////////////////
Book Manufacturing Concepts
///////////////////////////////
Perfect if producing POD, consider personalizing each book’s cover. This can be done with a simple name, different backgrounds or photos, graphic and fonts. The cost differences depend on type of cover which may also make total quantity ordered a factor. For large hard cover orders, have personalization done by extra line stamps for the most economic. For soft cover, the economical personalized options are more suited for non-printed spine options such as comb and saddle.

Fold out (gate fold): Any included material in a book that is larger than the text page. Inclusion in book, by definition, must be printed on oversized paper and folded smaller than finished book size to allow for unfolding.
Watermark: Mark traditionally produced during paper production within the structure of the paper. Digital watermarks may be produced by applying a ghosted mark during the printing process to paper or other media.

Considering different formats to your index can make it more user friendly, reduce page count, alter the “flavor” of the index, and more. While it is hoped that all genealogy authors feel and index is required, it shouldn’t be looked at as “something I’ve got to do”. Visit our information page for more examples and ideas.

Authors, did you know that if you only want a few pages in your book printed in color – say 10 out of a 200 page manuscript, you can order only those pages in color? No longer must they be together or in the front or back to produce this potential vast reduction in cost. Likewise, all your manuscript pages may be in color, but only the page numbers you specify will be printed (and charged) as full color.

Print Margin: Presses cannot print edge to edge on a page (impression area). Binding requires trimming also. Proper margin allowance ensures a pleasing end product. The gripper margin includes space that, while impression will take, it is not always quality. Additionally, for books, a sizable clear margin makes a more eye appealing book. (White space all around)

Having trouble finding anything in local records? Have you considered the “alternate” federal records to the standard (10 year) census? In addition to military and pension ancestors may have homesteaded or even purchased federal property. Also, there are some special schedules to the federal census. Most federal records are available from or through the National Archives in Washington DC, or their regional archives. Be sure you learn all the types of records (local, state and federal) are available when you are at a brick wall.
