If already paying for color, use of color watermarks on an otherwise black and white page can add “pep” and dimension.

Did you know a digital watermark could be described as traditional ghosting of images? A well planned execution can produce much finer detail to much greater effect than many professional ghosting projects of yesteryear.

Even in today’s world, print has still proven the most effective channel for sales – even when promoting electronic editions. Free PR promotion in publications (newspapers, newsletters, bulletins, circulars, boutique papers and magazines) may need follow up – the days of “if you write it they will print it” are, for the most part, long gone. In addition to brainstorming what publications to send them (alumni, your hometown, subject town[s], industry specific, church, organization, or other special interest), be sure to include all contact information (including electronic) in your cover letter.

A taxing question: Are tax records standardized? No – different places and times produce different records. A quick listing of a few include: poll or head, quit-rent, income, real property (land), personal property. Documents may record these separately or in combination and the quantity of data varies as well.

While there may be an app for so many things, what happens if there isn’t? For instance, one of our staffers has a Yahoo mail account and a Windows tablet. Yahoo has a seamless Android app, but there are security issues with the Windows system. Don’t get too caught up in needing an app for everything: Hopefully your appliance has enough memory, it can handle the traditional websites one might be used to visiting on a desktop or laptop.

Consider:

  • Adding topical watermark as “wallpaper” on a lightly worded page. Many genealogy layouts produce lots of empty space on a given page – but rarely in continuous chunks to insert a good size graphic. Watermarking the item you wish to include allows it to be viewed, but doesn’t add to the overall size of the manuscript. Many authors then also offer that artwork in it’s entirety online or in bonus e-book files.

Watermarks, or ghosted images, may be applied inexpensively in today’s book projects digitally. Traditionally watermarks were produced as a component of the actual paper during production. Digital watermarks allow for more versatility, control of design (including color), and economy.

As the year begins, don’t sell yourself short. You know your product best. One of the standard pitfalls in today’s world is “doing marketing” and then setting it aside as done. Do you consider your genealogy done after the first book? For better continued sales, continued marketing is indispensable.

Sometimes derivative sources (history or genealogy books, transcriptions, etc.) can slow research progress more than working without them. While many rarely think this way: Any resource that is not primary or original may contain more errors (though rarely on purpose). If an annotated genealogy book is the basis of family research, take the time to fact check before building upon the foundation. When possible, finding one’s own way through a family tree allows for more accomplishment than finding others research to fill a family tree.

Did you know you might be able to use your phone for manuscript transport and tweaking? There are full fledged apps for most of the production software you may use for your book. For instance, did you know Microsoft Word is free for Android phones? While you wouldn’t want to spend much time using your phone’s keyboard for composition, it would be super handy if you were traveling and had long layovers. Taking time with your manuscript on your phone may also give you ideas for digital edition(s).

Too much of a good thing: While technology exists to jam pack content on a page, and layer it with digital watermarks, don’t use it in such a way that it splits the reader’s attention too much. You don’t want readers feeling like they have a puzzle book that is hard to read.

Looking for other ways to have your manuscript “at hand”? A tablet may be a better compromise between a desk or laptop and a phone. Again, Android users can download MS Word app for free, while Windows users can access MS Word for free, while online. Many of today’s tablets can also attach keyboards, mice and wireless printers with ease while having robust memory (both speed and capacity).
