What’s It Mean? A-Z
///////////////////////////////

Gutter Margin: Margin on the “inside” of a printed book page. When books are printed, the margin on the inside is usually larger to allow for easy book handling. We assure your gutter margin when making plates for printing, free of charge.
From: ANSI/NISO/LBI STANDARD FOR LIBRARY BINDING – (inner margin, gutter margin, back margin)  The distance between the binding edge of a printed page and the printed area.

Halftone (pre-press): An image taken from your photo that has a dot pattern laid on it (or made up of dots) for better reproduction. Without the correct dot pattern, the photo would look like a bad copy machine copy (motley). Many of today’s newer copiers automatically lay a pattern, thus better copies.

Tips to promote QR code scans (part 2)

  • Note most QR codes will work if damaged even 30% – allowing for some “high traffic” uses such as name tags, postcards, coasters, etc.
  • Don’t saturate your viewer with too many codes – make them useful and enjoyable.
  • Try to keep codes away from glossy surfaces – matte makes scanning easier for the novice and under more lighting conditions. Still want to put one on your book cover? You could skip lamination or UV protection, but applying a dust jacket, belly band, or sticker over the finished cover would be better for the longevity of the book.
  • If using multiple codes, don’t place them too close together – you are trying to make it easy for the user. If on a mail piece with smbc – allow for distance as well.

September, 2015 Ezine – Computer Wednesday, Sep 2 2015

Are you a RootsMagic user? Want to upgrade to Windows 10? No need to worry, there just may be some more upgrades in store. Please see below directly from RootsMagic:

While RootsMagic works great under Windows 10, apparently Microsoft snuck in a last-minute change that didn’t exist in earlier test versions and prevents the internal WebSearch from working, certain text appearing on some screens, and backing up to Dropbox and Google Drive.

If you are running RootsMagic 7 for Windows – Look for the “Update Available” indicator in the lower right corner of your RootsMagic 7 program screen, and click on it.

If you are running RootsMagic 4, 5, or 6

1. Download the .REG file from files.rootsmagic.com/RootsMagic-Win10-Browser-Fix.reg

  1. Run the .REG file to add the necessary entries to your Windows registry. It will display several scary warnings. Just keep telling it that “yes”, you do want to make the change.  This registry fix is only needed if you are running RootsMagic 4, 5, or 6 under Windows 10.

September 2015 Ezine – Book Production Wednesday, Sep 2 2015

One thing, sometimes overlooked, is that the overall book format(s) may alter both production and shipping costs: If a large part of your sales may be shipped, consider both finished book height and width, as well as page count (depth) and explore packaging and shipping costs. QR codes, bonus material URL, or additional media can be used to cut the total size/weight without reducing the content.

Tips to promote QR code scans

  • Provide a call to action near the code.
  • Be mysterious, but useful: consider “teasing” code content, but not fully describing.
  • Go beyond the basics, consider using your color scheme/logo/font/theme in the design of the code. If you are basic, use design options (color/shape/photo) to draw the eye to the code.
  • Test to be sure your completed size works – don’t get too small or overly large.
  • Remember content will be viewed on mobile device. Example of making desirable content work in this format might be: Instead of bringing up a full size map, email the link to the full size map, so the user can view on larger computer monitor. Likewise, remember generally slower connection speeds when deciding how much compression or segmentation of material to incorporate.
