The second contains Jack Hardin’s book about early Hardin pioneers who faced danger from Indian attacks and experienced many hardships in settling Kentucky. The Colonial RILEY Families of the Tidewater Frontier (1635-1999), by Col. Robert S. Riley (Ret.), 1999, 2011 revised, 2014 reprint. Volume 1 ISBN 978-1-936091-02-7, 6×9″, Hardbound 2 volume set totaling 1,878 pages (Volume 1 – 918, Volume 2 – 960). The earliest known Riley immigrants to the Chesapeake Bay Area were the three brothers – Garrett, Miles, and Thomas – who arrived in Northern Virginia in 1635. Many of the oldest, surviving Riley Colonial Records and Land Grants of Maryland and Virginia, which are dated in the late 1600s and early 1700s, pertain to these immigrants and their descendents. Many early Colonial Rileys used Christian names taken from the Bible, such as Samuel, Pharoah, Jeremiah, and Eliphaz. Moreover, the early Rileys in Colonial America passed down many traditional given names used by the O’Reillys (Anglicised as Reyley or Riley) in Ireland, such as Brian (Briain), Farrell (Ferghail), Hugh (Aodh), John (Seaán), and Miles (Maolmordha). And, in Colonial days, many Rileys of the Tidewater Frontier were related and moved in and out of the Colonies now known as Maryland and Virginia. In addition to the three Rileys mentioned by name above, there were other Riley immigrants who came to Maryland and Virginia in the late 1600s and early 1700s. In this book, the writer discusses all known individuals of the early generations of eight different Riley lines from the time of arrival of their immigrants to approximately 1850. By 1850, all of these Riley lines had multiplied so greatly that tracing their descendents to those living today is almost an impossible task. From 1850 to the present day, the writer discusses only his own branch of Rileys. Prior to this publication, such a comprehensive analysis of the early Riley families of Colonial Maryland and Virginia did not exist, and the writer believes that this project will be helpful to all persons, who claim descent from an early Riley family of the Tidewater Frontier and are interested in learning their Riley family history. History of the Shumate Family Kentucky Pioneers, 1475-1992, by Col. Robert S. Riley (Ret.), 1982, revised 2011, reprint 2013. ISBN 978-1-936091-01-0, 6×9″, Hardbound book, 898 pages. This Shumate family history consists of two major parts. The first is a narrative account of the family in seventeenth century France and their battle to be free of religious persecution; the immigrants–Jean de la Chaumette and his three sons–John, Samuel, and Daniel–who settled in early Stafford County (now Fauquier), Virginia; the first five generations to include the descendents of John [II] and Daniel [I] in Virginia; and Daniel Shumate [V] and his descendents, many of whom living today are widespread throughout the United States. The second part of this book contains supporting documentation for the narrative account and genealogical lineage charts. There are twelve appendices which document and clarify the lines of descent contained in part one. They consist of church and other records of the family in France and England; extracts of primary and secondary records of Virginia and Kentucky to include probate, deed, tax, and marriage documentation; Federal Census extracts; gravestone inscriptions; and lineage charts constructed to trace one’s own particular line of descent. I want to assure the reader that professional researchers and I, myself, obtained the documentary extracts appearing in these appendices from the Federal Archives, the Virginia and Kentucky State Archives, and various county court files in the United States; from the official national and department (provincial) archives in France; and from well known Huguenot libraries or societies in France and England.
