Riley Family Book – Pre-Publication Sale Friday, Oct 29 2010

Gregath Company, Inc. is pleased send you this special pre-publication sale for the 2010 edition of the following book:

The Colonial RILEY Families of the Tidewater Frontier (1635-1999), by Col. Robert S. Riley (Ret.), 1999, revised 2010 edition. 6×9″, Hardbound 2 volume set totaling 1,900 pages (Volume 1 – 918, Volume 2 – 982). The earliest known Riley immigrants to the Chesapeake Bay Area were the three brothers – Garrett, Miles, and Thomas – who arrived in Northern Virginia in 1635.  Many of the oldest, surviving Riley Colonial Records and Land Grants of Maryland and Virginia, which are dated in the late 1600s and early 1700s, pertain to these immigrants and their descendents.  Many early Colonial Rileys used Christian names taken from the Bible, such as Samuel, Pharoah, Jeremiah, and Eliphaz.  Moreover, the early Rileys in Colonial America passed down many traditional given names used by the O’Reillys (Anglicised as Reyley or Riley) in Ireland, such as Brian (Briain), Farrell (Ferghail), Hugh (Aodh), John (Seaán), and  Miles (Maolmordha).  And, in Colonial days, many Rileys of the Tidewater Frontier were related and moved in and out of the Colonies now known as Maryland and Virginia.  In addition to the three Rileys mentioned by name above, there were other Riley immigrants who came to Maryland and Virginia in the late 1600s and early 1700s.  In this book, the writer discusses all known individuals of the early generations of eight different Riley lines from the time of arrival of their immigrants to approximately 1850.  By 1850, all of these Riley lines had multiplied so greatly that tracing their descendents to those living today is almost an impossible task.  From 1850 to the present day, the writer discusses only his own branch of Rileys.  Prior to this publication, such a comprehensive analysis of the early Riley families of Colonial Maryland and Virginia did not exist, and the writer believes that this project will be helpful to all persons, who claim descent from an early Riley family of the Tidewater Frontier and are interested in learning their Riley family history. 2011 Retreat Announced Wednesday, Oct 27 2010

2011 Retreat announcement: With the economy in mind this year’s retreat has shrunk from three days to two – allowing us to beat the retreat prices from 2009 AND 2007. Plans are currently for 10 hours of lectures, but we may expend to more. The group size is smaller, allowing for more one on one time, and we are back in the beautiful natural setting of Cave Springs. Due to the small size, we will be extending special invitations this week at a special patron price. If you have attended or lectured at our events in the past and don’t hear from us this week, contact us for this special deal. Standard, all inclusive, registration will open to the public (if space available) November 15, and will remain open until space is filled, or October 1, 2011 – whichever comes first. Class only registration will be open from November 15, 2010 until October 1, 2011 (or until space fills).

A website of your own – part 1
///////////////////////////////

Do you already rent space?

What does it cost to have a website? You are probably already paying for web space and don’t even know it. Most dial up and high speed providers package web space into their fees. While the address (domain) may not be http://www.mynewbook.com or http://www.ImaAuthor.com, what do we expect for free? There are also several free service providers such as Bravenet, Webspace, and Angelfire, but they dictate your address (based on user name) and commonly add extra ads to the site and restrict you from actually selling anything on the pages. An address (Universal Research Locator or URL) provided by your internet service provider (ISP) or at a free server, are generally their address with your username added in such as:

www.neok.com/~ccorner
(Old Grand Lake, OK area provider – now defunct address)
or
www.geocities.com/carriescorner
(geocities was a free service provider powered by Yahoo that discontinued service October, 2009)

EZine Vol 9#10: Genealogy Wednesday, Oct 20 2010

Wayne Vaughn in the Carter County (Oklahoma) courthouse maintenance department was helping move some old ledger books in the old jail (above the election board) and ran across something interesting.  He first thought the book had a rock or something underneath the back cover, but upon opening the 1919 Civil Cases book found a bullet lodged in the back cover and pages.   We have no idea when the incident might have happened.  Sometime right after statehood (not likely) or more recently, like 50 or more years ago?  Or maybe even a later date?  Anyway, if this book could talk, I bet it would have an interesting story to tell.

EZine Vol 9#10: Design Wednesday, Oct 20 2010

An index adds two valuable things to any research or reference book. The index makes the book easier to use and adds to its marketability. We offer indexing with our manuscript preparation, and for those customers who have prepared their own manuscripts.

Each manuscript varies in the amount of time required. We try to find the least expensive and acceptable index method for our customer needs. Almost everyone has their own idea what a complete index is.  We suggest at least a complete surname index for genealogical books.  Content and format is up to you!

Font (Type or Typeface): The actual type/style of lettering used in an item.

Family Maps of Lee County, Illinois  Deluxe Edition, by Gregory A. Boyd. 338 pages, 8.5×11″, spiral softbound book.  Locating original landowners in maps has never been an easy task-until now. This volume in the Family Maps series contains newly created maps of original landowners (patent maps) in what is now Lee County, Illinois, gleaned from the indexes of the Illinois State Archives. But it offers much more than that. For each township in the county, there are two additional maps accompanying the patent map: a road map and a map showing waterways, railroads, and both modern and many historical city-centers and cemeteries. Included are indexes to help you locate what you are looking for, whether you know a person’s name, a last name, a place-name, or a cemetery. The combination of maps and indexes are designed to aid researchers of American history or genealogy to explore frontier neighborhoods, examine family migrations, locate hard-to-find cemeteries and towns, as well as locate land based on legal descriptions found in old documents or deeds. The patent-maps are essentially plat maps but instead of depicting owners for a particular year, these maps show original landowners, no matter when the transfer from the federal government was completed. Dates of patents typically begin near the time of statehood and run into the early 1900s. ADAR441-$39.00

Family History in the Wars, by William Spencer, 2007. 256 pages, 4.5×6.5″,  softbound book. As both wars begin to pass into history, this is the perfect tool for discovering how your family suffered and served. The World Wars of last century were the greatest conflicts ever known. Over a million men and women enlisted and served in British armed forces alone between 1914-18, and the figure for the Second World War was even higher. Almost every family has ancestral links to the Services, but finding details on individuals has often proved a difficult task. This clear, accessible guide shows how to get the very best from all sources now available. It gives expert advice on researching men’s and women’s service records for World War I and II, including Army, Navy, Air Force, nursing and merchant seamen. Wide-ranging in scope and practical in approach, it shows how best to trace an individual’s career, including medals and gallantry awards, prisoner of war files and casualty lists. Women who served in both conflicts are well represented, from the online releases of Women’s Auxiliary Corps records to First World War nurses, and newly available naval records open whole new avenues for research. Special techniques and tips are provided for tracing family members in the Commonwealth and Dominion forces and the Indian Army, and a special section considers how to use British and American sources to discover details of American servicemen and GI brides. Family History on the Move, by Roger Kershaw and Mark Pearsall, 2006. 256 pages, 4.5×6.5″, softbound book. Family history can be relatively straightforward as long as one’s ancestors did not move around too much or change locality. However, with the mass migrations and empire building during the 19th and 20th centuries, most family trees will eventually get to those hard-to-pin-down men and women whose lives took often radical departures – and who settled in new countries or regions of the British Isles, or arrived in Britain for the first time. This book describes those movements into, within, and out of the UK from the sixteenth century to the present day, and shows readers which records to consult to track down their mobile ancestors. The chapters are interwoven with practical features on issues that could crop up during research and case studies to illustrate the sources. AD2375-$8.00  Currently IN STOCK
