Do I need a Web Presence?

If you are an author or genealogist, the short answer is a shouted YES. Whether it be a Facebook or MySpace page, Twitter account, blog (Blogger, WordPress, etc.), a dedicated website with your own domain, or combinations of the above, being on the internet is becoming as standard as business cards, letterhead, and post office boxes for professional and hobbyists alike. You need to “get out there” to be found, just be careful how much you reveal. I always suggest using a post office box for an online address. If you want to talk to folks on the phone, but are worried about giving your permanent information out, buy a pay as you go phone. They are like disposable email addresses, if the account becomes a problem, discard it.

Free or nearly so:

Make your own coupons! These can be done in a variety of formats (flyers, brochures, book marks, business or post cards, etc.). Be sure to include all your contact information, the item in question, and something extra for the bearer. Coupons can be for a particular amount or % off, free or reduced shipping, an autographed copy, a mystery bonus (some imprinted advertising specialty), etc. The sky is the limit. Give the coupons out in person, leave them on freebie tables, tack them to bulletin boards, include them in correspondence, etc. Don’t forget to consider terms such as an expiration date and if the coupon needs to be surrendered.

Consider developing at least one aspect of the book into a lecture, or character presentation, and market this presentation – always referring to the book.

When printing new business/calling cards, consider adding author to your title and/or including your book’s homepage address (URL).

What’s good to find other researchers, is also good to find other folks that would like to purchase your book :o )

You have paid for acid free paper and your books is “built to last” - don’t forget to include this in your list of positive selling points, when possible.  After all, the beautiful book you have produced cost you (and, by extension the customer) more than if it was on newsprint paper!  One place you always have a chance to mention this is in a press release.  You may choose other selling points for space use in paid advertisements and networking time and space.

Make your postage count!  If you have a reason to send anyone correspondence, include information about your publication in some format as well.

As with email lists, check online for bulletin boards or discussion groups having to do with your subject matter.  After getting an idea of how information flows, post information about your book.

August 2003, V2#8: Marketing Sunday, Jan 11 2009

Join email lists that have the same subject matter as your book.  After getting an idea of the type of information that is posted and the rules, send an email to the list(s) about your new publication.  You might start at http://groups.yahoo.com or http://www.egroups.com
