November 2009: V8#11: Design Tuesday, Nov 3 2009

Too often, we get into the “just the facts” mind set when deciding what we should put in and what we can leave out of a book.

  • Candid and “hammy” photos should be considered – as well as formal posed photographs.
  • Captions should not feel forced. Add information as you see fit.
  • Places also make a family what they are (or were). Don’t focus solely on the people.
  • Dates are a good thing to have – and use, but don’t discount something because of a lack of one.
  • Captions and photos both can be provided by – and credited – to the author, or other contributors.

A good example of an informational caption: has facts, as well as details. All people in the photograph should mentioned – names and relations (or lack thereof) are also noted.

Though it may take a bit longer to prepare an e-book in PDF, for the genealogist, it’s universal enough that rarely does new hardware or software need to be purchased. The humble PDA makes a good PDF book reader.

Regardless of whether your e-book choice is by disk, download, or secure internet site, there are several advantages to publishing electronically – the most obvious is the lower cost of publication.

Online Copyright Registration

If you have you manuscript fully digitized, online registration is the suggested method. We can do it for you, or you can do it easily on your own. Some sort of high speed internet connection is suggested, for ease. You complete the form, pay, and submit your digital manuscript through the Library of Congress secure server. The registration fee is less than registering by mail, and you don’t have to surrender two published books for their shelves.

  • Containing original manuscript in digital form.  Example – prepared in MS Word, the reader can use the Edit+Find command just like a search engine. Also editing & updating can be accomplished by the reader. This makes an excellent handicapped edition that can be shipped with the printed book, or sold separately.
